Mother of Pearl
Mother-of-pearl inlay (‘raden’) refers to the technique of decorating objects with shells such as blue mussel, abalone, or nacre, which are manually polished and cut.
When creating mother-of-pearl artwork, the process of applying lacquer and polishing is typically repeated multiple times to achieve a perfect balance between the inlay and the object. Items adorned with mother-of-pearl maintain their glossy and radiant appearance for an extended period.
Lacquer
Lacquer is a type of hard and usually shiny coating or finish applied to materials such as wood or metal. It is most often made from resin extracted from trees and waxes and has been in use since antiquity.
In the production of natural lacquerware, raw tree lacquer is applied layer by layer onto the surface of an object—often requiring dozens of coats—before being repeatedly polished. This process results in a stunning, dense lacquer finish.
